Roots+Wings Nature School

What is Roots+Wings?

Roots+Wings Nature School allows children to dive into nature-based learning through play.

The small class size of 8-10 students allows for Sandy to dive into deeper mini-lessons. The setting is intimate, surrounded by beautiful gardens and woods. Our nature classroom has been mindfully designed. In the winter, we meet in a large greenhouse and then go into the outdoor classroom for free play or on beautiful winter days. When the sun is shining, we are in the outdoor classroom immersed in the community garden, wooden water table, mud kitchen and learning tables.

How is Roots + Wings Nature School different from other nature centered programs?

We aren’t a program.  We believe in following the child’s lead.  Where does their attention go?  What do they observe?  We approach a child’s natural love and joy of nature with an eye toward each nature student’s unique development. We do have weekly study themes that focus our learning but we are flexible in our studies.  We work with children and their families to hone observation skills. We look at small things like moths and moss and ask big questions.  We look at big things like trees and mountains and wonder where they began.  At Roots + Wings you are surrounded by excited learners, both adult and child!

What sets us apart?

Our classes. Our small classes are tailored to early learners.  Each child-centered class includes hands on, engaged learning that’s fun and motivating.  Each class strives to include movement, language, social skills, science and math.  Our goal is for each family to take what they learn in the hour and a half class and apply that to the natural world around their home.  We inspire families to make the gifts of the seasons a year long, never ending study of all that is wonderful and wild.  We believe that children are brilliant teachers. When we slow down and enjoy their world, magic happens.  The Roots + Wings community is growing and we invite you to grow with us.

Who is the teacher?

Miss Sandy. “I come to Roots + Wings after a year of discussions with its founder, my daughter, Natasha.  Natasha and I have bounced ideas off each other at every opportunity!  She, knowing that Roots + Wings has great possibilities, and me with a growing drive to delve into nature studies with young children. This has set us on a journey together.

I come out of the exceptional education and early intervention worlds. I’m a speech and language pathology assistant.  I’m a Certified Master Gardener. Most of all, I’m a passionate teacher of young children. I am forever fascinated by their curiosity, honesty, raw emotion and ability to see what we adults miss. They give me energy, patience, perspective and focus.  I’m excited about the opportunity and I welcome young learners and their families to classes that will inspire all to make nature studies an everyday joy.”

What is the style?

Roots+Wings Nature School is a beautiful approach to early learning. It most similarly relates to Charlotte Mason style teaching but we draw from many different learning avenues. Charlotte Mason wrote, “It is infinitely well worth of the mother’s while to take some pains every day to secure, in the first place, that her children spend hours daily amongst rural and natural objects and, in the second place, to infuse into them, or rather to cherish in them, the love of investigation.” We see Nature School as a way to connect to the earth and other families while soaking in some nature based instruction.

What topics will children be exposed to?

Nature School focuses on seasonal topics. Our winter session will focus on our observation skills, nature leaders and occupations, rocks & minerals, mountains, valleys & streams, squirrels and ants. Sadly, our spring session was canceled due to Coronavirus but the planned themes were Nest and Eggs, Toad and Frog, Worms/Soil/Compost, Seeds/Germination/Planting a Garden, Trees in Spring and Flowers. Summer camp is full of lots of nature play!
